Three talks relating to Charles Ammon, inspirational MP and leader of the postal workers in the 19th and early 20th century.

The Salter Centenary Project 1922-2022 was set up to celebrate 100 years of Ada Salter becoming the first woman mayor in London and her husband Alfred being elected MP. In the same year Charles Ammon, postal worker and close friend of Alfred, was also elected MP. Ammon was an inspiring speaker who later became a minister in the post-war Attlee government. This event will feature three talks followed by questions, covering Ammon's long relationship with the Salters, the trade union of which he was an outstanding leader, and the health and welfare of the workers he represented. Speakers:Graham Taylor: 'Old Kent Road Charlie' and Alfred Salter.Norman Candy: The Early Postal Trade Unions.David Green: Sickness, health and London postal workers in the 19th centuryGraham Taylor is a historian and author of 'Ada Salter: Pioneer of Ethical Socialism'.Norman Candy is on the NEC of the CWU and wrote 'London Postal Workers - a trade union history 1839-2000'David Green is Professor of Historical Geography at King’s College London and is leading a major research project 'Addressing Health: morbidity, mortality and occupational health in the Victorian and Edwardian Post Office,' funded by the Wellcome.
